Johnson broke the 400m world record at the 1999 IAAF World Championships in Seville, Spain. The record fell when Johnson ran a time of 43.18 seconds.

During the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, Johnson advanced to the final round of the 200m. He ran the opening 100 meters in 10.12 seconds and achieved a peak speed of over 40 kilometres per hour (25 mph). He finished the race in a world record time of 19.32 seconds, breaking the record by more than three tenths of a second than the previous record he had set in the U.S. Olympic Trials - the largest improvement ever on a 200m world record. The record stood until 2008 when Usain Bolt unbelievably ran a time of 19.30 seconds at the Beijing Olympic Games.

In 1996, Johnson ran 19.66 seconds in the 200m at the U.S. Olympic Trials (Atlanta, GA), breaking Pietro Mennea's record of 19.72 seconds, which had stood for 17 years. With that performance he qualified to run at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA.

Johnson broke the 400m Indoor world record at the 1995 USA Indoor Chamionships in Atlanta, GA. He ran a record-setting race, with a swift time of 44.63 s. The record stood until 2005, when 19-year-old Kerron Clement broke it at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 44.57 s.

Along with teammates Quincy Watts, Andrew Valmon, and Butch Reynolds, Johnson won the 4x400m Relay at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. They did so in world record fashion with a time of 2:54.29. Johnson ran the anchor leg on a team that blew away the rest of the field.
