- Barry Sanders retires from football
July 28, 1999 - Barry Sanders dashed away from professional football, announcing his retirement while still in the prime of his career. He left the Detroit Lions grasping for answers the way defenders often grasped for the elusive running back with the breathtaking moves, only to catch air instead.
"The reason I am retiring is very simple," Sanders said in a statement released yesterday. "My desire to exit the game is greater than my desire to remain in it."

- Emmitt Smith breaks NFL career rushing record
Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith broke the National Football League?s career rushing record in a game against the Seattle Seahawks at Texas Stadium.
In the 4th quarter, Smith surged through a hole on the right side of the Seahawks? defense for 11-yards. Smith broke the record of 16,727 yards set by the late Chicago Bear Walter Payton.

- LeBron James signs a record $90 million deal with Nike
May 22, 2003 - High School phenom LeBron James signed a record $90 million deal with Nike. The deal dwarfed any of the previous initial contracts given to a young, unproven player who is skipping college and had yet to shoot their first jump shot in the NBA.
"Nike is the right fit and has the right product for me,'' James said. "They are a great group of people who are committed to supporting me throughout my professional career, on and off the court.''
