I see that Old Navy is now selling licensed NFL apparel in their stores. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but at least I don't have to worry about brand clashing a Reebok shirt with my Nike shoes.... And speaking of Nike, the new Oregon Football uniforms they designed are pretty incredible. The top features duck wings on the shoulder pads, a fluorescent yellow color scheme, and a futuristic dot matrix helmet pattern that is impossible for me to describe. Hopefully they will see fit to keep this particular design for the long haul instead of switching to a drastic new look every two years. Hey Nike, we get it. Because your founders are Oregon alumni doesn't mean the Ducks are your private design guinea pigs. The new joints are fresh, now walk away for a while, and leave it alone.
If I were Venus Williams, and my initials were "VW", how quickly after becoming wealthy would I have bought a Volkswagon symbol to hang from my chain? Why haven't Volkswagon and Venus teamed up yet? I can't think of anybody else famous with the initials VW.
Best football related joke from David Letterman this week: "The world's oldest dog passed away last week at the age of 21. Michael Vick responded, "Hey, don't look at me."
Now that Rick Rubio has decided to play basketball in Spain rather than for the Timberwolves, I think we can officially say they had one of the worst draft strategies ever. Why draft two point guards back to back in one draft. I can't think that any other NBA team with the number 5 and 6 pick in the draft would have ended up with both Rubio and Johnny Flynn. They have to pray that Steph Curry doesn't bloom into an All-Star or they'll regret this one for a long time to come. Hopefully Minnesota can sell the rights to Rubio to the Knicks and Dantoni can lure him away from Barcelona to become the next Steve Nash.
I think we're nearing the point that we can safely say that the Packers made the right decision to go with Aaron Rodgers and send Brett Farve packing. And by the way, has any player ever handled a difficult transition from an all-time great like Farve, better than Aaron Rodgers? I can't recall him making a single misstep along the way. While never sulking or complaining about his situation, he simply played the cards he was dealt, and now he may be in the process of becoming a star.
For the sake of the sport, Major League Baseball has to do something about the average length of each baseball game. Think of it like this, I can watch eight episodes of Entourage in the same time it takes to watch the Reds and the Astros play a 10-inning four-hour snoozefest. Would anybody think the level of entertainment of these two options is remotely comparable?
I'm loving the HBO "Hard Knocks" show this year, and I'm practically shocked at how competent the Bengals coaching staff seems to be. I mean for years the Bengals were such a second-class organization that fans could only assume the worst about the team. This may be the first time ever that "Hard Knocks" improved the perception of a coaching staff... In other reality show news, the season finale of "The T.O' Show" aired Monday night. I don't know if they plan to take the cameras to Buffalo for the season, but I'd really encourage it. Besides, I can only imagine that this would cause some of the biggest stories to come out of the Buffalo social scene ever. Assuming that there is a Buffalo social scene.
